23 Jul

The Magician, the second of the six-book series, Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, by Michael Scott did not fall short of what is expected based on his first book on the series, the Alchemyst: a deeper story, another set of interesting characters and more magic.

Danu Talis would sink beneath the waves and that our world would end.
It would come again…
When the two that are one and the one that is all have arrived, when the sun and moon are united.

There will come a time when the Book is taken
And the Queen’s man is allied with the Crow.
Then the Elder will step out of the Shadows
And the immortal must train the mortal.
The two that are one must become the one that is all.

Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid

Kane Chronicles: The Red PyramidKane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid
If you think summer is too short for a breath-taking adventure, think again! Rick Riordan is back with his latest book, “The Red Pyramid”.

The Red Pyramid is an “incarnation” of Egyptian Myth, embellished with realistic characters who share our world. Riordan, once again, used his tested ingredients to come up of an educational book that both stimulates your interest and at the same time, keeps you seated upright ready to plunge at the suspense he laid for you.

The Red Pyramid The Red Pyramid opens with the main protagonists, Carter and Sadie, going into a museum with their dad, Julius. It became apparent, however, that Julius was planning something else other than visiting for they caught him using magic to summon the god, Osiris. Something went wrong however, for a creepy, cold voice spoke to their dad talking about getting back his throne and then, they saw their dad being entombed alive in a coffin which was swallowed by the floor as if it was water.

Coraline

6 Apr

CoralineNeil Gaiman’s Coraline is a simple story about a curious little girl who ventured in her new house and found herself in another world quite similar to ours, and yet different.  The house, the number of rooms, the furniture, her bed and even the type of food she eats are exactly the same but her mother and her father’s appearance are different.  As the story progresses, her “other” mother asked her to stay for good and leave her real parents but she chooses otherwise.  This made the other mother angry so she kidnapped Coraline’s parents and threatened to kill them if Coraline continues to deny her.  Coraline, however, found out that she and her parents were not the only ones trapped in this world and this gave her an idea on how to trick the other mother.  It is in this plan and situation that the story of Coraline becomes frightening and dangerous.  The book details how she was able to go back into our world, save her parents, save the other trapped children in the other world and how she got rid of the other mother for good.

City of Glass

11 Mar

It took time for me to work on this review and I have three reasons why:

(1) The book WOWed me.  I couldn’t find the right words to describe how I felt after reading the book and I don’t now what to expect of my review so I didn’t write one, until now.
(2) Another book got in the way.  Actually, it was a series, I read the vampire diaries and got into it too much I read it one after another.  Now, I’m stranded with more than 3 reviews to work on.
(3) Work got in the way.  Doesn’t it always?

City of Glass image courtesy of amazonIt’s been a month or so and I had to read my reviews as regards the previous books to get me into the mood of writing the third of the Mortal Instruments: City of Glass. City of Glass ties Clary’s story into an interesting closing.  It was focused on finding the last of the mortal instruments so that Valentine can complete his dream: to eradicate the unworthy shadowhunters and create a new Clave.  In spite of the tight security that even Clary wasn’t able to “fully” break into, Valentine managed to bring in his demons and enter the glass city.  His main purpose was to find the mirror, which he shall use to summon Angel Raziel.  By tradition it was said that the person who summoned Angel Raziel will be granted one wish and this wish is what Valentine wants. There was war, truce attempts, revealing side stories and well, a mushy ending.  The book offers an adventure full of action and realistic fiction – if there’s such a word.
